| These worked out great, the sound quality is the same as most other models we have tried, but the + here is these were tough and were put to the test being dropped and maybe even thrown around. Kids loved them so much they fought over them when more than 2 kids were wanting to play. |
My niece LOVED them.

I have a 4 year old niece, who has NEVER asked me for anything EVER. But she was extremely serious about how much she wanted "princess" walkie talkies. There is a Disney princess set out there which she had seen, but I couldn't find them in the store, and they had gotten horrible reviews on here. I did see these Barbie walkie-talkies in the store, and I actually called her to check if they were ok to get! I did see the negative reviews here, and I have to say, the ones in the stores now must be an updated model to what you see here.
1) The ones I bought are not "squishy". I imagine they used to have some kinda gel case on them. They are hard plastic now.
2) The heart-shaped button on the side of the walkie-talkie which you need to hold down to talk, was no problem for her to press and use. I imagine the older models had the "gel" casing covering that button. The button is white plastic. Neither of us had a problem using it.
3) The only thing that's hard to move is the on-off switch on the bottom of the unit, but she was able to manage it so it was no big deal.
4) They worked well! It's a kids' walkie-talkie set so what do you expect? They worked all over the house - she was thrilled.
I would definitely recommend these as a great gift for a young girl. Not too expensive. They DO include batteries already installed BUT I noticed in the fine print that they were "for demonstration purposes only" so I imagine you'd need to buy new ones soon (they are special watch-type batteries - not AA or AAA batteries).
Pros:
- Look nice, Work well
Cons:
- On-off switch is hard to move/slide
- specialied batteries included, will need replacing soon, and they are not cheap.
I would definitely get them again. It's a unique gift.

A quick fix for the hard to press talk button

Like the other reviewers have noted, the push to talk button is hard for young kids to master. My husband though simply used an X-acto knife to cut through the soft plastic encasing (just follow the heart design) and voila problem solved. There a hard button underneath that our 4 year old daughter mastered the first time around and the walkie talkie has become a hit with her and all her friends when they come over.

These are hard for little ones to squeeze to talk...why couldn't they have had a button like the old ones had to talk.
Maybe there is an easier kind out there. |

We bought the Disney Princess set and it didn't work at all. We received the Barbie set and it seemed to work better when were close together, but when we moved more than 15 feet apart the sound was not coming through one receiver. Maybe ours is just defective.
For Christmas we got our children the cheapest Uniden set from the electronics section of Walmart for about $18. It is 1000 times superior to any toy set. It has a 10 mile radius (supposedly) and multiple channels. When our daughters opened it they had no interest in it because they aren't pretty, but maybe that could be helped with stickers or even paint.
DON'T BUY TOY WALKIE TALKIES, THEY NEVER WORK. |
